Top Companies Know What’s Good for Business

The corporate world knows a thing or two about doing business. And they’ve overwhelmingly lined up in support of equality: The Human Rights Campaign’s 2009 Corporate Equality Index rates a record-smashing 259 major American companies with perfect scores—up from just 13 in 2002. In one company’s words:

“Shell is pleased to have achieved a perfect score on the CEI-rating. This was a priority for us because it further demonstrates our commitment to inclusiveness in the workplace,” said Marvin Odum, president of Shell Oil Company. “A 100-percent rating helps us to better attract, recruit and retain diverse talent to contribute to our overall business success.”

Steve Soboroff, Republican Against 8

Los Angeles businessman Steve Soboroff is a Republican Against Proposition 8 in November.

Soboroff stood up for the rights of all Californians in 2000, when he opposed Proposition 22.

Steve’s position constituted a display of courage one year before he ran for Mayor of the City of Los Angeles. He came within three percent of defeating the eventual Mayor James Hahn.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Republican Against 8

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is a Republican against Proposition 8. On April 11, speaking to the Log Cabin Republicans National Convention, Schwarzenegger told Log Cabin President Patrick Sammon, “I will always be there to fight against that.” A month later, Schwarzenegger hailed the idea of marriage equality as a boon for the California economy. “You know, I’m wishing everyone good luck with their marriages and I hope that California’s economy is booming because everyone is going to come here and get married,” said Schwarzenegger at an event in San Francisco.

The State Legislative Analyst estimates that state and local governments could lose tens of millions of dollars in the coming year if Proposition 8 passes. That could mean higher taxes or cuts to vital services like police and fire.
